Life's What You Make It
Growing up I was an extremely happy child until reality set in about seven years of age. When getting up and going to school every day was "just the way it was" I got sick of it. My dad had wise advice, "Act like you're happy and you will be." It just sounded like gobble de gook to me but looking back I realize just how right he was.
Happiness is a state of mind. It is not an objective to be achieved but an every day way of BEING.
I recently read a book titled, "Stuff Happen and Then You Fix It." This was a helpful book. It reminded me of all the encouragement my dad gave me growing up.
Life is your game, on your terms. If you're waiting for friends, spouses, children, the government or anyone else to fix things, you will be disappointed.
This isn't to say that these people and organizations don't have their place but you must take control of things if you want to succeed in life.
Sometimes you have to roll with the punches but some people (not unlike myself) tend to just roll and roll and say, "Oh, well. That's life. Nothing you can do about it." But this is not entirely true. Roll with the punches when there is nothing that can be done, such as when you find you have brain cancer. But when you find out you're getting fired because you're always late, get up earlier! It is madness to say you can't prevent most things.

But Depression is a Real Illness
While all the information I've provided is true, the scientific thinking currently is that depressed people have a chemical imbalance which causes depression. I believe this or something like it is true based on personal experience.
I've been on antidepressant medication and it has helped me to use the positive energy I find to change my life. I don't think it is just a placebo effect. Ask my kids. They know when I've forgotten my medicine!
People who have problems with depression shouldn't be ashamed. They should be treated and then proceed to embrace life! There is only so much you can do when your body is wired a certain way. Accept the help of modern medicine and get on with life!

Depression IS an illness. Thank you for sharing your uplifting words! I have been on antidepressants for several months now.
I enjoyed this hub but I am wondering if the antidepressants have helped you or just your natural ability focus on the positive? (I am wary about antidepressants & maybe therapy will help wean you from them). lots of luck!
It is not just good but brilliant advice, i see the true meaning and how can we get that amazing thing called happiness.
